The sheer amount of talent in the NBA is off the charts, but only a select few coaches can get all that talent to work together and buy into a system. Heading into the 2023-24 season, OKC Thunder head coach Mark Daineault was handed one of the youngest rosters in the NBA, and by getting them to the number one seed in the Western Conference, he earned himself the Coach of the Year Award.
The Coach of the Year Award is not just handed to the coach whose team had the best record. Plenty of factors could go into it, including whether a team exceeded expectations or found success despite dealing with a plethora of injuries. With multiple factors influencing the award, there are plenty of candidates for Coach of the Year entering the 2024-25 season.

Ime Udoka (Houston Rockets): During his time with the Celtics, Udoka finished 4th in Coach of the Year voting, and he is in a great position to push for the award this season. Voters for this award typically reward coaches who can take a young roster and find success, which Udoka has the potential to do this season with Houston. The Rockets have one of the younger rosters in the league, but Udoka has developed most of those guys over the past two seasons while improving the team's overall defense.
Joe Mazzulla (Boston Celtics): In his second season as the Celtics head coach, Mazzulla was able to lift the Larry O'Brien trophy. While that is highly impressive for a second-year head coach, that success does not tend to lead to a Coach of the Year award. The last ten Coaches of the Year have not won the NBA Finals during that season, and with the Celtics among the favorites to repeat, Mazzulla has an uphill battle to climb with the voters.
Jamahl Mosley (Orlando Magic): Mosley is another candidate for leading a young team to a highly successful season. Orlando put on a solid showing in the playoffs last season, taking the Cavs to seven games despite not having the strongest offense. Well, Orlando certainly improved this offseason, so those offensive concerns may not be as strong this season, especially if Paolo Banchero can continue to ascend into a superstar.
