Making a deep run into the MLB postseason without a strong bullpen is an almost impossible task. No matter how much the game changes, one thing that won’t change is the need for a high-level closer, but finding one is far easier said than done.
Being able to breathe a sigh of relief when a certain reliever enters a tight game is something only fans from certain teams can experience this season. Those relievers who bring a sense of calm to a hectic situation are also fighting for the Reliever of the Year Award, and below, we’ll break down the up-to-date odds for the award in both the AL and NL.

Emmanuel Clase (Cleveland Guardians): While Mason Miller has received a lot of attention this season, Clase has continued to dominate quietly, surpassing Miller and becoming the heavy favorite for this award. He is currently pitching to a .81 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 44.1 innings.
Additionally, the Guardians' closer is 29-32 on save opportunities, which puts him at a good pace to break his single-season record for saves in a season. The right-hander certainly isn’t showing any signs of slowing down either, as opponents are hitting .162 off him this season.
Mason Miller (Oakland A’s): Miller is a flamethrowing right-hander who is boasting some impressive numbers that should keep him near the top of the odds board for this award. Currently, he is 15-17 on save opportunities, with a 2.27 ERA, 1.67 FIP, and 70 strikeouts in 39.2 innings of work this season. Even if those numbers can't win him this award, at the very least, they got him his first All-Star Game nod.
Clay Holmes (New York Yankees): Since being acquired by the Yankees, Clay Holmes has been a staple in their bullpen, earning the role of closer. In 39 innings this season, Holmes is 21-27 on save opportunities and has 41 strikeouts, which was good enough for him to earn a spot in the 2024 All-Star Game. For as good as those numbers are, Holmes has been shaky over his last few outings, and if that continues, Yankees fans will likely be begging for another closer at the deadline.

Ryan Helsley (St. Louis Cardinals): Even since 2022, the man nicknamed “Hellz Bellz” has been electric for the Cardinals out of the bullpen. In 34 save opportunities this season, Helsley has converted 32 of them, as he is pitching to a 2.36 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 42 innings of work.
Robert Suarez (San Diego Padres): Suarez has seemingly come out of nowhere to become one of the best closers in baseball this season. In two big league seasons prior to this year, the right-hander was 1-7 on save opportunities with 19 holds. Yet, this season, he is 22-24 on save opportunities with a 1.67 ERA with opponents hitting .191 off him.
Kyle Finnegan (Washington Nationals): Due to the fact that he is one a sub-.500 team, Finnegan has not gotten the recognition he's deserved this season. The Nationals closer is 25-29 on save opportunities to go along with a 2.45 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 40.1 innings of work.
