Background & History

Even if people are not golf fans or followers, “The Masters” Tournament is likely still something they are familiar with. Since 1934, The Masters has been a part of the golf world and has become arguably the most watched and followed professional golf tournament. Played at the historic Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia, the PGA event has seen some of the best moments in golf history and some of the most decorated golfers ever to play put on the historic green jacket given to winners. Aside from the jacket, winners also receive $15,000,000, and the winner gets his name engraved in the silver Masters trophy.

Some of the event's previous winners include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, and, most recently, Scottie Scheffler. Each year always features a stacked field, including the U.S. Amateur champion since Bobby Jones, the creator of The Masters, was an amateur champion himself.

One of the most admirable aspects of the tournament is that once a player wins the event, they have a lifetime invite to play in it. This is an excellent example of the long tradition and history that surrounds the tournament. For years, golf fans have gathered at Augusta National or their friend's house to watch the tournament and maybe enjoy a traditional Masters snack in the pimento cheese sandwich.

How to bet on The Masters

Since sports betting has existed, but especially since it was legalized, the Masters has become an incredibly popular event to wager on. Bettors have an extensive range of betting markets to choose from for the event, and each year, sportsbooks seem to add more. The most traditional wagers on the event come in the form of finishing position. Bettors can wager on a golfer to be the winner or just make the cut.

The outright market gives bettors the best and highest odds; while the odds worsen, the finish position moves up. For example, for the 2023 Masters, Patrick Cantlay is (+1400) to win the event, (+300) to finish in the top five, and (-162) to finish in the top 20. Aside from finishing position, bettors can also wager on the leader after a certain round, the winner of a group, the top finisher by nationality, head-to-head bets, and more prop bets we will touch on later.

The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to wagering on the Masters, but with everything in betting, we advise bettors to stay within their means and do proper research on their wagers. An example of research could be finding out how well players have done at the event before or how the course could affect certain golfers' styles.

Live betting

All wagers for the Masters don’t have to be made before the event, as bettors could be live betting until the last putt is made. Like all golf events, the odds for the outright winner, group winner, and finishing position consistently update as the tournament moves forward. Bettors can then jump in on a longshot they think is playing well or any other way they would like to wager.

Aside from the finishing position odds updating, bettors can also live wager on which golfer they think will win a specific hole or if they will hit the fairway on their next drive or not. This is an excellent way for bettors who are watching the event live and noticing the confidence of a golfer either plummeting or growing to increase their profit from the event.

Props and special bets

One of the other ways that bettors can profit from the Masters is through prop bets. Each sportsbook on the market may offer one specific to their shop, but for the most part, bettors can find these prop bets in whichever sportsbook they prefer. Some examples of these prop bets include whether or not a hole-in-one will be hit, what the winning margin will be, what the winner will shoot on hole 72, or if a playoff will decide the tournament.

Prop bets for the tournament can also pertain to players, so bettors may be able to find a prop bet revolving around Tiger Wood’s performance. One of the most challenging prop bets to hit is the straight forecast bet, in which the bettor has to pick the first and second-place finishers exactly. An example of one of these bets for 2023 is Jon Rahm to finish first and Rory McIlroy to place second at (+7500).

One of the special prop bets that customers can bet on in 2023 is whether LIV golfers perform better than the PGA players in the event, which is a significant topic in the golf world these days. Another unique prop that can usually be found, especially on FanDuel, is whether or not history will repeat itself in certain areas of the tournament. An example of this is “Will Dustin Johnson be in the Top 5 after round one?” that specific bet is currently set at (+500).
