Over the past decade, the MVP award has almost exclusively gone to quarterbacks. That trend doesnโt seem to be shifting entering this season either, with quarterbacks occupying nine of the top ten spots on the odds board. This includes last yearโs MVP, Lamar Jackson, who is currently second on the odds board.
With the regular season halfway over, this race will start garnering intense debate on every football podcast. You can check out the up-to-date odds below and start planning NFL futures for the 2024-25 season.

*odds as of 11-19-2024
Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills): Allen finished 5th in MVP voting last year. However, much like Mahomes, the Bills signal-caller finished the season with a career-high in interceptions with 18. He also finished with 29 touchdown passes, the lowest total heโs produced since 2019.
Some of those numbers could be partially blamed on the Bills' offensive dysfunction early in 2023. Since Joe Brady took over, Allen has looked more comfortable on offense, making him the closest to Lamar Jackson on the odds board. After ending the Chiefs' undefeated season, Allen has 2,543 passing yards, 18 touchdown passes, five interceptions, and five rushing touchdowns.
Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens): After starting the season 0-2, Lamar Jackson got his team back on track with four straight wins, including a comeback win against Cincinnati. Jackson has not been torching defenses through the air, but he's made big throws when he's needed to while also running all over opposing defenses. Following a tough loss to the Steelers, in which he threw for a touchdown, Jackson has 2,876 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns.
Jared Goff (Detroit Lions): Due to the Chiefs' loss, the Detroit Lions are the new favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Lions' success stems from a few areas, but Goff's control over the offense and accuracy is a big one. With four more touchdown passes in a blowout win over the Jaguars, Goff now has 2,492 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 73% completion percentage, which is the second-highest in the league.
Season | Player | Position | Team |
---|---|---|---|
2023 | Lamar Jackson | Quarterback | Baltimore Ravens |
2022 | Patrick Mahomes | Quarterback | Kansas City Chiefs |
2021 | Aaron Rodgers | Quarterback | Green Bay Packers |
2020 | Aaron Rodgers | Quarterback | Green Bay Packers |
2019 | Lamar Jackson | Quarterback | Baltimore Ravens |
2018 | Patrick Mahomes | Quarterback | Kansas City Chiefs |
2017 | Tom Brady | Quarterback | New England Patriots |
2016 | Matt Ryan | Quarterback | Atlanta Falcons |
2015 | Cam Newton | Quarterback | Carolina Panthers |
2014 | Aaron Rodgers | Quarterback | Green Bay Packers |
The last time a player who did not play quarterback won the MVP was in 2012, when Adrian Peterson won it after he rushed for over 2,000 yards.
Only two defensive players have won the award since 1957, with Lawrence Taylor being the most recent in 1986.
Winning multiple MVPs is more than possible, as Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson have all won at least two in the past ten years.
A quarterback does not just have to lead the league in touchdowns to win the award, as Dak Prescott had more TDs and yards than Lamar Jackson in 2023.
