Temple vs. Old Dominion Game Preview and Pick: Back Owls at Neutral Site

The losses have begun to stack up on the Old Dominion Monarchs, who have lost four straight games heading into their matchup tonight with the Temple Owls. Defense is not something Old Dominion has cared to play as of late, which gives Temple the opportunity to get back in the win column for the first time in two games.

Game Preview

Temple and Old Dominion opened up the Diamond Head Classic with blowout losses. The Owls fell 80-56 to the Nevada Wolf Pack last night, giving them a 6-5 record coming into today. The Owls have not boasted strong shooting numbers all season, but yesterday, they couldn’t buy a bucket, as they finished 28% from the field and 32% from three.

With that performance, Temple is now ranked 324th in the country in effective field goal percentage and 146th in adjusted offensive rating on Bart Torvik. The lone standout performance for the Owls yesterday came from Hysier Miller, who had 18 points, as he leads the team with an average of 18.2 points per game.

Miller has a team-high usage rate of 29.6%, and he’s one of the main reasons why the Owls are 59th in the country in three-point rate. The only problem is Miller is shooting 27.2% from deep, and as a team, the Owls are shooting 30.8% from beyond the arc.

However, if there were ever a team that Temple could find their three-point shooting stroke against, it would be Old Dominion. The Monarchs have let opponents shoot 37.6% from three, which ranks them 334th. In their 111-87 loss to TCU yesterday, the Horned Frogs shot 39% from three and 55% from the field on the ODU defense.

Only the most gifted offensive teams have a chance to stay in a game like that, and Old Dominion is not one of those teams. After yesterday’s loss, the Monarchs are 236th in adjusted offensive rating on Bart Torvik and 223rd in effective field goal percentage. Vasean Allette (15.7 PPG) and Chaunce Jenkins (15.6 PPG) handle most of the scoring for the Monarchs, but Jenkins is coming off his worst game of the season with just six points on 22.2% shooting.

Pick for the Game

Temple is listed as (-3.5) point favorites in most Virginia mobile betting apps, and I think they can leave Hawaii with at least one win and cover. Not only has Old Dominion struggled to find the win column, but they’ve also struggled to cover games, as they are 2-7 ATS this season.

While the Owls may not be an offensive juggernaut, they can get some easy points tonight against an undisciplined Monarchs defense. Temple is a team that gets to the free throw line at an above-average pace, and Old Dominion has not been able to limit their opponent's trips to the charity stripe, ranking 351st in opponent free throw percentage.

Not only should Temple get plenty of points from the free-throw line, but if they attack the basket, they will likely find high-percentage looks since the Monarchs allow a shooting percentage of 64.6% on close two-point attempts. The more Temple’s confidence grows from easy buckets, the easier it might become for them to knock down their heavy dosage of threes. The Monarchs tend to put themselves in deficits that they can’t escape offensively, and I think that will be the case again tonight.
