After a lighter day of NHL action yesterday, there are 10 games on the schedule for tonight. Two of those games have become the focus of my best bets and one of them is an underdog play. We’ll get into both games and go over which underdog it is that I targeted this morning.
At 7:00 PM ET, the (7-3) Philadelphia Flyers will be taking on the (3-9) Columbus Blue Jackets, a game in which the Flyers currently sit as road underdogs at (+105). This Flyers team has been playing well as of late and is my underdog play of the night against this struggling Blue Jackets team.
Philadelphia comes into tonight on a two-game winning streak and a (3-2-1) record on the road this season. The Flyers have been one of the best defensive teams in the league this season as they are 1st in the league in opponent shooting percentage and 4th in the league in goals allowed. Starting goalie Carter Hart has been a machine to start the year with a .946% save percentage and a (6-0) record in regulation.
It’s been the opposite story for this Columbus team who enters tonight ranked dead last in the league in goals allowed and opponent shooting percentage. Elvis Merzlikins has started eight games in goal this year and currently has a .863% save percentage and a (2-5) record in regulation. The Blue Jackets offense hasn’t been much better as they are currently 31st in the league in goals scored and 32nd in the league powerplay percentage.
This Flyers team is the last team you would want to see when struggling to produce offense. Philadelphia has allowed one goal or less in three of their last five games so despite the fact they are 26th in the league in goals on offense they have the ability to strictly win games with defense. Columbus is (2-5) at home this season and I don’t think they have the scoring ability right now to beat this Flyers team.
The Senators and Devils have had two completely different starts to the season. Ottawa enters tonight losers in six straight games while New Jersey has won 10 of their last 11 games. If there is one thing these teams have in common it’s high-scoring games, which is why the over of the total in the game is my second play of the night.
The only thing the Senators have been able to do well this season has been producing offense. Ottawa is 10th in the league in goals scored but it’s been their defense that has caused the over to be (7-5) this season in their games. The Senators are 26th in the league in opponent shooting percentage and play a Devils team tonight that is 4th in the league in goals and has scored at least three or more goals in their last five games.
New Jersey has done a good job of taking advantage of weaker opponents this season as they enter tonight with the over being 4-0 in the last four games they’ve played against opponents with a win percentage below .400. I’m expecting another high-scoring affair tonight in New Jersey.
Philadelphia Flyers (+105)
Senators @ Devils Over 6.5 (-120)
