Tonight will feature the biggest college basketball slate since opening night and has a lot of interesting early season match-ups. The biggest game of the night will feature Michigan State and Gonzaga playing on an aircraft carrier but the sole purpose of Mid Major Money is to focus on the under-the-radar games that could warrant a nice betting profit. After going 2-1 in picks in the first edition we’re back tonight with two more picks.
The Bryant Bulldogs opened the season with a 108-point victory and even though that might not be possible tonight the Bulldogs are currently (-1.5) point favorites over Dartmouth. The Big Green we’re featured in our opening night edition of Mid Major Money as well and I’ll be picking against them tonight also and rolling with Bryant to cover on the road.
Bryant was the NEC conference champion last year but lost their leading scorer Peter Kiss. However, the Bulldogs attacked the transfer portal hard and feature another high-powered offense that can shoot the lights out. Last year's NCAA tournament folk hero Doug Edert is now a Bulldog and expected to put up big numbers this season. In Bryant’s blow-out, opening night win Charles Pride led the way with 23 points.
Dartmouth dropped their opening night match-up in Fordham by a score of 88-74. The Big Green didn’t do many things well but they showed they have the ability to knock down the three-ball shooting 45.8% from three. Dusan Neskovic led the way for them with 23 points, knocking down five three-pointers so he has the ability to keep pace with the Bulldogs high-level shooting ability.
It’s hard to gauge Bryant’s opening victory mainly because they played a D3 school but the one expectation is this is a high-scoring game. Dartmouth matches up a bit better with this Bryant team than they did Fordham however I think the Bulldogs have the scoring ability to edge them out.
Our second game features two of the most high-powered offenses in all of mid-major basketball with the UAB Blazers and Toledo Rockets. This is a mutual site game as the teams will be playing in game one of the Barstool Invitational. The point total will be the focus of my second bet as I’ll be taking the over of 156.5 in this one.
UAB features one of the most exciting players in the country Jordan “Jelly” Walker, who dropped 38 points in the Blazers opening night win. UAB scored 111 points against Alabama State with the backcourt duo of Walker and Eric Gaines proving to be one of the most dynamic pairs in mid-major basketball.
The Toledo Rockets might have lost their star player from last year but they still possess the offensive scoring ability. Toledo has a fast-paced offense led by big men Setric Millner Jr. and JT Shumate who can shoot the lights out while also giving the Rockets a slight rebounding advantage tonight as well. Defensively the Rockets are a work in progress and I’m expecting offensive fireworks tonight in Philadelphia between these two teams.
Bryant (-1.5)
UAB @ Toledo Over 156.5
