Marist @ Siena Game Preview and Pick: Red Foxes Hunt on the Road

College basketball fans will be treated to over 60 games tonight, and if you had to rank them from most watchable to least, there is a good chance this battle between Marist and Siena would be near the bottom. The 3-19 Siena Saints are set to host the Marist Red Foxes tonight in an MAAC Conference game, and while it may not have the primetime slot on ESPN, it is still worth a deep look from bettors.

Game Preview

To start it off, let’s get one thing out of the way. If you’re a fan of offense, this game could be a tough viewing experience for you. Heading into tonight’s game, Siena ranks 358th in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency on Bart Torvik, and Marist ranks 331st. In 22 games this season, the Siena Saints have only broken the 70-point mark in four.

Most of the Saints offense is handled by their two guards, Sean Durugordon (21.7 PPG) and Michael Eley (14.9 PPG). Both have usage rates above 30%, and while they are both currently shooting over 40% from the field, the Saints rank 345th in the country in effective field goal percentage (44.7%).

When these two teams last met on January 21st, Michael Eley was out due to an injury, which was a significant factor in the Saints only scoring 48 points for the entire game. Sean Durugordon was the lone member of the Saints to score in double figures with 16 points, as Siena shot 41% from the field and 33% from three in the loss.

Of course, it is worth mentioning that Siena only lost that game by two points, so while Marist put on a solid defensive effort, their offense only managed to score 50 points on 37% shooting from the field and 12% from three. This win is a prime example of how most of Marist’s wins go.

The Red Foxes only have two players currently averaged in double figures, Max Allen II (11.9 PPG) and Josh Pascarelli (10.9 PPG), so with that, the team has to rely primarily on their defense to end up in the win column. This emphasis on defense has led Marist to hold opponents to an average of 62.8 points per game and rank 99th in adjusted defensive efficiency on Bart Torvik.

Pick for the Game

Marist is currently listed as (-4) point favorites across most New York sports betting apps, and I expect them to control the game much more than they did in the previous meeting between these two teams. The fact that Siena is at home should not play much of a factor since the Saints are 2-8 SU and ATS on their home court this season.

There is no denying Marist is not a good offensive team, but I think they can win this game on the defensive end of the floor again, so all it will take to cover the number is a slightly better shooting night. The Red Foxes are holding opponents to a 48.1% effective field goal percentage this season, which is good for 66th in the country. While Siena will have both of their scoring threats back tonight, Sean Durogordon looks like he may be entering into a bit of a shooting slump, as he is coming off a 3-18 shooting night.

I don’t expect Marist to come in and torch the nets offensively, but I think they’ll be able to get plenty of easy buckets tonight. The Red Foxes are 20th in turnover rate on defense and forced the Saints to have 20 turnovers in the last meeting, so there should be plenty of transition opportunities for them.
