It’s a big Tuesday night in the NHL with 13 games scheduled to be played. One of the games in specific features a red-hot Winnipeg Jets team who has been playing stellar defense this season. This defense has spurred a gambling trend to occur that has a good chance of continuing tonight. We’ll preview their game against the Anaheim Ducks before getting into what exactly the trend is and if you should bet on it tonight.
The Jets enter tonight with a 9-4-1 record and playing at a really high level in their last 10 games. They’ll host an Anaheim team who is coming off a win but has been struggling all season and currently has a 5-10-0-1 record.
As I mentioned before the Jets' defense has been outstanding this season and they enter tonight 2nd in the league in goals allowed and opponent’s shooting percentage. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck should receive a lot of the credit for those numbers as he has put up a .935 save percentage this season leading the team to seven of their wins.
Winnipeg has also played smart hockey so far and has really limited their opponent’s powerplay chances. The Jets currently allow the fourth-fewest powerplay opportunities in the league. Brenden Dillon leads the team with only 17 penalty minutes this season.
Anaheim has struggled both offensively and defensively this year, entering tonight 26th in goals scored and 31st in goals allowed. Unlike the Jets, Anaheim has been unable to stop themselves from being at a disadvantage and is currently 25th in the league in powerplay opportunities allowed.
I mentioned how the team leader in penalty minutes for the Jets only has 17, well the team leader in penalty minutes for the Ducks is Max Comtois with 44 on the season. We’ll see if Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras can help this Ducks offense put up points tonight in Winnipeg.
The under is 8-1-1 in the Jets' last 10 games and with the total set at 6.5 tonight I think the best play should be betting for that trend to continue and taking the under. The Ducks' offense has been horrid this season but they will now face one of the best defenses they have all season.
Winnipeg has yet to have a game go over when playing at home this season or when they are favored and despite the obvious reason for this in their defense their offense has not been a scoring machine either. Winnipeg is 17th in the league in goals scored and 16th in shooting percentage so their offense is not what you would expect a nine-win team to look like.
The nice part of this game is even if the Ducks' defense struggles tonight you should be able to rely on the Jets' defense to limit Anaheim from finding the back of the net. I think the best bet on the board is the under in this one but I think it also might be worth taking a look at the puck line for the Jets as well.
